Curriculum

Corey leek harvestThe Children’s Hospital School aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the needs of all our pupils. Multi-agency working ensures that the correct levels of support and challenge are in place to bring about the best outcomes for each child.

Willow Bank Day School

At Key Stage 3 (years 7-9) pupils are taught in a mixed age / ability group. In year 10 pupils are taught together in a mixed ability group. Both these groups are offered a broad and balanced curriculum of English, Maths, Science, Computing, Drama, French, History, Geography, RE, PE, Art, Citizenship, ASDAN and PSHE.  This is supplemented with enrichment activities such as gardening, cooking and music. In year 11 pupils are currently taught in three groups. Students are offered accredited courses in English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Film Studies, PSHE, Preparation for Working Life, Computing and RE. The qualifications awarded to students include full GCSE, Short course GCSE along with other level 1, level 2 and Entry Level awards. 

For some children there is a timetable offer within the schools learning suite where 1:1 lessons and small group work is facilitated. These are used to help engage new students or to supplement the timetables of students who require extra support in addition to their work with their class. Students have the offer of completing elements of the ASDAN course alongside their curriculum studies.

For all the students the curriculum is delivered in small groups in a nurturing environment. Learning is supported by a strong pastoral element in the school and an active system of home visits and tutorials.

Corey Bursting Berry MuffinsLeicester Royal Infirmary

All students receiving education at the Leicester Royal Infirmary are given a highly personalised programme designed to meet their individual needs. The LRI team provide education for all learners across EYFS, Primary, Secondary and SEND.

Wherever possible, students will follow the programme of study and curriculum set by their home school. Where adaptations are necessary, staff will ensure these take into account the child’s current circumstances. Each programme is designed to maintain a balance between academic rigour, wellbeing and the demands of the child’s treatment in hospital.

If the programme of study from a student’s home school is unavailable, the LRI team follow the National Curriculum, aiming to offer a broad and enriching curriculum. The staff at the LRI are able to offer subject specialist teaching in a range of areas, from EYFS to Key Stage 4. Should the child be in hospital during controlled assessments or examinations, staff can work with the home school to support the students through these.

Education is available to students as soon as they are well enough and our staff aim to marry academic and therapeutic progress by working closely with the clinical team.

We may start with alternative curriculum work, but we aim to move on to academic work as soon as possible. We liaise closely with the students’ home school or college in order to gain an idea of levels of functioning and details of any forthcoming exams or imminent academic deadlines. We are also able to offer short, certificated courses, via Learn Direct for example.

For most of the time our students work on individual tasks, however we also run a weekly creative writing workshop and a themed week every half term where our students come together and work as a group.

We often have an ongoing art project that we all contribute to (see our dragon), and our guitars are frequently used.

All students receiving home tuition benefit from a fully personalised learning experience where the individual needs are at the heart of our curriculum. The Outreach Service aims to meet the needs of all learners from EYFS, Primary and Secondary stages of education and to provide specialist subject teaching in English, Maths, Science, Computing, Art, Film Studies, RE and Preparation for Working Life. In addition to this we also aim to support the Key Stage 4 choices from a students’ home school.

Wherever possible, students receiving home tuition through our Outreach Service will follow the programme of study and curriculum set by their home school. Where adaptations are necessary staff will ensure that the programme of study is matched closely to students’ needs. 

If the programme of study from a student’s home school is unavailable, the Outreach Service follow the National Curriculum and are guided, when appropriate, by the Department for Education’s ‘Assessment Principles’.
