Children’s Hospital School Leicester Gains Highest Environmental Award

Eco-Schools, part of Keep Britain Tidy, awarded its highest accolade, the Green Flag, to the Children’s Hospital School Leicester following an assessment. Participating schools have to demonstrate three projects which are assessed for the award: however, our eco-team substantially raised the bar when it put forward a whopping 11 activity projects.

Projects included an energy survey, monitoring classroom temperatures and ‘Switch-off Fortnight’. Healthy living schemes involved staff and pupils walking one mile each morning and a Fishkeeper Fry project supported by Maidenhead Aquatics in Leicester.

The pupils carried out an audit of kitchen and food waste, along with trialling various recycling methods. Their biodiversity scheme involved attending forest school last October, the school’s first ever residential trip in March, taking part in Keep Britain Tidy’s Litter Less campaign and a pollination project focusing on saving bees.

The assessment results concluded that there were absolutely no areas that needed improvement. The coveted Green Flag will arrive at the school after Easter.

The school’s eco-effort is led by a small committee currently made up of six students and three members of staff, but all pupils take part in the activities.
